A stone can be carved.

Metal can be cast, forged, or hammered.

A surface can be engraved, painted, gilded, lacquered, or inlaid.

Understanding production techniques helps reveal the craftsmanship, technological knowledge, tools, and artistic choices behind an object.

Hand-built

Hand-built refers to objects shaped by hand rather than primarily formed on a potter's wheel or industrial machine.

This technique is particularly important in ceramic traditions, where clay may be constructed using hands, coils, slabs, or other manual methods.
